step 1

Open the image in which you would like to apply this effect.
Now you decide on how many bits you want to create. I close to make 9 bits of my selected image.
To make this process easier we can change the image size or crop the image as per our need.
I selected to crop the image to 3 X 3” size (Height=3inchs, Width=3inches)

Creating Bits: I created 9 bits of the same size, to make the bits we use the guides function to create exact size bits.
Click on the top ruler and drag it into the image to create line. If you’re not able to view the ruler, go to view > rulers, shortcut for ruler is [ctrl+r]

step 2

This will create a horizontal guide line in the image make sure that the guide line sits exactly in one inch. In the same manner create another horizontal line dividing the image in to 3 exact pieces.

step 3

In the same manner also create vertical lines, for vertical lines click on the left ruler and drag it into the image.

step 4

This is what your image should look like.
Now click on the background layer and select the marquee too from the tools

step 5

With the help of the marquee tool select the first block, as we have the guide line it becomes easier to select the block.
After selecting the first block press ctrl+j.
[Ctrl+j is the shortcut to duplicate the current active layer, when you select something and then press ctrl+j it duplicates only the selected area.]
Name the new layer as block 1.
